Komal Ahmad
Impact Entrepreneur
The reasonable woman adapts herself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to herself. All progress, therefore, depends on the unreasonable woman. Komal is an unreasonable woman committed to intelligently Solving the World's Dumbest Problems™, starting with hunger and food waste.
The unfortunate reality is that we waste 3X more edible food than there are hungry mouths to feed. Komal's discovery that ‘Hunger is not a scarcity problem, it is a logistics problem’™ compelled her to found Copia (www.GoCopia.com).
As Founder of Copia, Komal and her team intelligently solved the complex logistics associated with the redistribution of highly perishable surplus food from businesses, commercial kitchens, and events to nonprofits in need. Copia’s proprietary technology and turn-key logistics solution dramatically and scalably reduces food waste and ends hunger across North America.
Copia has successfully diverted over 6.5 million pounds of food from landfills (enough to fill 40+ football stadiums completely). Copia will feed 7 million people, all while providing businesses and nonprofits with over $21M in savings.
Komal’s leadership and vision have led Copia to be distinguished as 1 of the top 3 startups run by women in the U.S. and 1 of the top 8 startups graduating out of Y Combinator.
Komal has also been recognized by:
• Forbes featured Komal twice on their coveted ‘Forbes 30 Under 30’ list
• One of the Most Powerful Women in the World by Entrepreneur Magazine
• Most Powerful & Impactful People in Business by Marie Claire
• One of the Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company
• Top 50 Most Badass Women in the World by InStyle
• Toyota as their ‘Toyota Mother of Invention'
Komal was also recently honored with the prestigious Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award.

I love to solve environmental, social, and policy problems with business-positive solutions that matter. To accomplish this, I focus on key results, build amazing teams, and quickly adapt to new insights.
I have enjoyed working on diverse projects — from small to large, throughout my career in program management, sustainable development, international affairs, public policy, strategy, and operations. My personal and professional experiences have taught me the following about myself:
💡 I can successfully create, scale, and optimize public policies and environmental, social, and governance solutions positively impacting 20k to 2B people
- I put the client at the centre of all that I do
- I excel at the execution of big ideas with given constraints
- My gut instinct is good but I seek data to inform my decisions
⚡ I can align, lead and grow world-class program teams from 5 to 50 people
- I love to win, but helping the team win gives me greater joy
- I listen before I speak
- I tell great narratives that motivate
🌈 I educate, refine and drive myself to be a better person
- I am constantly learning because I never settle
- I stay calm when faced with adversity
- I focus on making high-quality decisions
I enjoy meeting new people and hearing new perspectives. Reach out if you want to talk to me about emerging environmental, social, and governance risks, creating policy products, or art.

Grassroots Finance Action
I was given the wonderful opportunity to lead an innovative savings-led microfinance initiative on behalf of a partnership with Oxfam America and Freedom from Hunger, Saving for Change (SfC). By facilitating the training of autonomous savings groups rather than delivering credit and savings through institutions, SfC delivers services to the rural poor that microfinance institutions do not reach, at a fraction of the cost. By working with twenty local NGOs in five countries, we have created 35,000 savings groups with over 700,000 members generating both money and power for some of the world’s poorest women. This model was the inspiration for my book 'In Their Own Hands: How Savings Groups are Revolutionizing Development.' published by Berrett Koehler. see www.intheirownhands.com
I am now a Research Fellow at the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University and at the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire. My graduate students and I are researching traditional savings circles in immigrant communities. See the link to "Achieving the American Dream on an Immigrant's Income". The idea is to understand how immigrants who often arrive with virtually nothing prosper within a generation. Research underway shows how remittances by immigrants from rich countries not only dwarf international development efforts (600 billion per year vs 176 billion for all international assistance) it far better targeted. I am currently launching a new venture "They Already Have the Answers, Just Ask: A Commonsense Approach to Building Local Economies at Home and Abroad" that sidesteps the aid establishment and identifies local "geniuses" and give them the resources they need to implement their ideas. (see the link) Between these projects I teach "Finance for the World's Poorest at the School for International Public Affairs at Columbia University.

Soil In Formation (SIF), PBC
Director of Communications for Soil In Formation (SIF), PBC. Excited to assist in the expansion of this company focused on the regeneration of global soil through in situ and time sensitive auditable soil data and the building of a global contextual soil health platform. Building the partnerships necessary to restore the earth.
Committed to strengthening woman's leadership, member of Pleiades Network of environmental leadership. Worked with North Star Transition, Nourish Hawaii, food systems initiatives, iwatermap and other global initiatives. Additional focus on expansion of climate tech science, new soil and water restoration technologies, and energy transition to project based, intergenerational and global educational programs. Creating new models for economic systems that restore health and nature with intergenerational energy and creativity.
I have developed further understanding of what systems transformation looks like, restoring biodiversity through building collaborative eco systems, identifying how to initiate behavioral change and investor literacy. Systems transformation is difficult within a complex society that has lost its connection to the natural world. I focus on building collective action and communicating our shared interests. Creating, educating and catalyzing relationships between different segments of the economy. How do we build communication between investment communities and true ground level impact that has potential to scale. How do we restore universal understanding of being stewards of nature, and the importance of regenerative agricultural methods to economic, planetary and human health. How do we restore the trust we have lost from younger generations.

Savimbo
I'm a pacifist. My work is focused on integration during an era of extreme technological and environmental change. As an MD-technologist and serial entrepreneur, I apply high-tech from hard-science in critical sectors. I lead a team of 300+ delinquent savants who specialize in solving hard scientific and social problems using emerging technologies. Our latest project is Savimbo which sells fair-trade climate credits direct from smallfarmers and Indigenous groups in tropical forests.
Prior work includes biodiversity credits, carbon sequestration, Web3 (DeFi, crypto, smart-contracts, GameFi, SocialFi, and digital ledgers), wearables, film production, newspace, behavior design, civ-tech and smart cities, AI and ML, cybersecurity, near-infrared spectroscopy, fMRI, stem cells and tissue-engineering, 3D printing, VR, specialist networks, nanotech, voice-recognition software, microbiome, web/app product design, business and startup strategy, social enterprise, popular-science writing, scientific PR and niche marketing. In global health, I develop high-tech for low-resource environments.
We use emerging technologies to promote population health. We are apolitical and industry-agnostic to this aim and passionate about reducing barriers to innovation at the intersection of research, technology, and science.
We recruit and train high-IQ individuals with non-traditional backgrounds working with the military, law, medicine, computer science, business developers, finance, creatives, indigenous peoples, and academics around the world.
To quote Karen Kilroy "I can't help but wonder how much further technology could go if we solved things for people who had the biggest problems first — and then made games."

Edward R. Cesare
Sea Ahead, Inc.
With 40 years in the capital markets, Ed Cesare has accumulated experience in a broad
spectrum of banking and investment formats. His background includes asset-based lending,
mezzanine, equity and venture capital. Over his career Ed has established a strong track record
of returns. He has served as a line manager and board member in both public and private
companies and can provide essential intellectual capital in support of strategic development
and fiscal management. His knowledge of accounting, manufacturing and other business
fundamentals allow Ed to maximize opportunity and minimize risk.
Ed now serves as Entrepreneur in Residence and as a Venture Partner at Sea Ahead, Inc. Sea
Ahead is an innovation and investment company for the Blue Economy. Verticals within the
Blue Economy that are of particular focus to Sea Ahead include: aquaculture, clean maritime
shipping, coastal resilience, offshore energy and met-ocean data.
Ed was a Founding Partner of Pleiad Wellness. Pleiad was a very early investor in the “Wellness
Economy,” which it defined as any product or service that enables a middle-class aspiration to
live better. This involved pursuing better health, a sustainable lifestyle, and consumer
spending trends in a full consumption economy. Specific example verticals ranged from novel
drying technology that provided feedstock for healthy beverage, to CPG companies bringing
healthy snacks to the center store, to environmentally friendly equipment for weed removal on
a municipal scale. As an early investor in the Wellness space, Ed is deeply familiar with the
market forces driving the world towards more sustainable economies. He has spoken on this
topic at several industry meetings. Many of the tail winds that Pleiad saw in the Wellness
Economy Ed sees in the Blue Economy.
Before founding Pleiad, Ed was a Partner at Medici Medical Group, a venture capital company
in the medical device and life sciences space. Ed was largely responsible for shaping Medici’s
foray into healthcare, creating a coherent investment thesis that focused on medical devices
and maximized Medici’s core competencies and balance sheet. Medici’s work further focused
on cardiovascular diagnostics and therapies. Investing in these early-stage companies gave Ed
extensive experience in technology, data management, regulatory affairs, out-licensing and
intellectual property strategy.
Ed’s connection to the Blue Economy also stems from his experience as a lifelong sailor and
ocean racer. He was Managing Director and Co-Skipper of PleiadRacing, a professional sailboat
race team that provided a highly cost-effective marketing tool to its sponsors in the Wellness
Economy as well as to pro bono clients.
